Northern recognizes training from approved apprenticeship programs registered with the U.S. Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship as applicable toward an Associate of Applied Science in Skilled Trades. This program allows individuals who are currently enrolled in or have completed a registered apprenticeship to combine their apprenticeship training with college-level coursework to earn an associate degree.
Program requirements are established through agreements between the College and participating apprenticeship programs. Students complete general education coursework through the College while receive academic credit for the technical instruction and on-the-job training complete throught their apprenticeship program. Eligible students may utilize funding available through the Skilled Trades Apprenticeship Nontradtiional Degree (STAND) initiative to support completion of required general education coursework.
There are three components to the program:
- General education courses are offered by the College.
- Technical specialty courses, including classroom instruction required by the specific apprenticeship program, which may be supplemented by college courses in some cases.
- On-the-job training is part of the apprenticeship program and is awarded credit under agreements negotiated by the partners.
Upon completion, graduates will be able to:
- Use written and verbal communication skills in the workplace.
- Apply interpersonal skills in the workplace.
- Apply principles of mathematics and science to contemporary issues in society and in the workplace.
- Complete an approved apprenticeship training program using the technical skills required in the specific occupational area.
IMPORTANT GRADUATION INFORMATION: ORNT 090 is a graduation requirement. See your advisor to determine if you have met this requirement.
