Academic Support Services

Academic Resource Centers

All three West Virginia Northern Community College campuses provide student support through the Academic Resource Centers (ARC). The ARCs located on each campus are staffed by professionals and paraprofessionals who provide academic and personal skill development opportunities. The ARCs provide students with the following:

  • individual and interactive academic spaces
  • programs that enhance academic success
  • research assistance
  • guidance in using their student portal and D2L system
  • tutoring support, including an online tutoring option
  • ADA accommodation support and services
  • Test proctoring

Academic Alert Program

The Academic Alert System is a proactive communication tool that allows instructors to voluntarily alert students regarding their progress. Alerts can be issued to redirect or reaffirm student learning.

Accessibility & ADA Accommodation

West Virginia Northern Community College is committed to assuring that students with disabilities are afforded the same opportunities and the same responsibilities as all other students.

To Register with Accessibility Services:

Contact the ARC at ada@wvncc.edu or call 304.723.7517 to schedule an appointment for intake and registration. An Accessibility Coordinator will work with faculty, staff, and community agencies to arrange for reasonable and appropriate accommodations.

IMPORTANT:  Documentation should be provided during the intake and registration appointment.  This needs to take place well in advance of coursework, to allow time for coordination of accommodation with faculty, staff, and other service providers or to secure equipment which may be necessary.

Brightspace Assistance: ARC staff are well prepared to help students develop proficiency using Brightspace, WVNCC’s learning management system (LMS).

Registration Assistance: ARCs are equipped with computers and accessible, knowledgeable staff who can answer questions regarding the registration process and navigation of online tools and systems.

Study & Work Space: ARCs welcome students for quiet, contemplative study or energized, collaborative group sessions.

Technology Lab: ARCs offer desk top, laptop, and tablet resources for student use on campus.

Tutoring & Study Support: Free tutoring is available to all enrolled WVNCC students. Each campus offers tutoring in a variety of subjects including English, Biology, Math, Accounting, Computer Information Technology and more. Schedules vary each semester and are available online or by contacting the ARC.  Employment as a tutor and/or work-study is also available to qualified students.

Online Tutoring & Support: WVNCC tutors are available online by appointment.  Brainfuse, available through the Student Portal, offers live, on-demand virtual tutoring twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

West Virginia Northern Community College encourages students to take a proactive approach to learning by using the resources provided by the ARC on campus and online.
