Multiple Measures Placement

WV Northern follows a policy of Multiple Measures Placement to place newly-admitted students in appropriate mathematics and English coursework. This policy was approved by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission in October 2022. It is consistent with the Community College Research Center’s findings that multiple measures assessment “generally has positive impact estimates on enrollment in and completion of gatekeeper courses in English and math.” Initial implementation will begin with Fall 2023 registration.

Degree and certificate-seeking students are placed into English and Math courses using the following methods:

High School grade and GPA: Placement Score Table

ACT and SAT scores: Placement Score Table

High School Equivalency (HSE) tests: Placement Score Table

Placement exam administered by WVNCC: Placement Testing

Guided Self Placement

Students will work with an advisor to determine the most appropriate placement.
